Using a few tools, you can create your own map tiles from images such as site plans, customers own mapping images or hand drawn images
Download and install Maptiler
Visit the website Maptiler and download the latest version of the Maptiler software. Install to your machine and open the program.
Turning your image into map tiles
Select “Standard Tiles” and either drag and drop your image onto the window, or select “Open a file…” and browse to your image.
Your image will not have any coordinate data, so we need to click “Set” to align the image with some form of mapping.
Choose “Assign location visually (Georeferencer)” and the next window will show your image on the left, and an online map on the right.
On the right, you can search for the location you need to narrow your online map to where you need it.
When you are in the area needed, choose a point on your image that you can reference on the map on the right. For the example below we have chosen the left corner of the top right pond, left click on your image and move the zoomed reticle to a definable point. Then left click on the right hand map, and move the reticle to the same point. The more accurate you are, the better aligned the two maps will be.
You can change the right side map to satellite view also if needed, to change go to the top right drop down and choose “MapBox Satellite”.
When you are done placing your points, the more the better, click save and then click continue.
On the next screen select “Folder”, choose a location to save the files in, and wait until rendering is done.
The files you need will be in the folders, the folders names will be the zoom level that the tiles within are for.
Putting the new tiles to use
Now you have your tiles, you can use them with the Gateway. If you are unsure how to do this, please read the FAQ on Saving map tiles to a usb drive.
If asked if you wish to overwrite what is already on the USB drive, chose yes. These files will overwrite the tiles you have obtained from Maperitive if you use the above guide.
If you use the free version of Maptiler, you will only be able to render 2 levels of zoom, 15 and 16.
So it is recommended to look into purchasing Maptiler to use the custom zoom levels. You can find information on the prices from Maptilers website.
