For demonstrating & testing the SMC Gateway, we have created a free to use application that can generate a range of fire alarm messages out of a serial port on the PC/laptop. This can then be connected to the gateway, thus simulating a fire alarm. If, like most PC/laptop’s, your’s doesn’t have a serial port then a standard USB to serial adaptor should work fine. Please note that you may need a null modem adaptor between the gateway and the PC as the serial TX/RX pins may need reversing.
This application is designed to work with Windows PC’s / Laptops, however it will work on Linux machines using the “Wine” emulator.
If you use a USB to Serial adaptor, here is how to set this up.
- Install Wine, and plug in your USB to Serial adaptor.
- In a your terminal type “dmesg | grep tty”, this should show something like “usb 1-2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0”. Remember the number after USB, ie USB0.
- Now in terminal type, “ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1” . Ensure that the /dev/ttyUSB* number matches the number above. This will link the USB item to a virtual Com Port 1.
- To check that you have the correct permissions type “groups” in the terminal, and if you do not see the “dialout” group listed for your username the type “adduser yourusername dialout”.
Now right click the Fire Alarm Simulator and open it with Wine.
